Tooth extraction symptoms

As per the guidelines established by the Dubai Health Authority, it is the responsibility of every oral surgeon to educate their patients about the potential symptoms that may arise after a tooth extraction procedure.

I fully embrace this idea, as transparency and patient understanding are essential for providing high-quality care.

What symptoms are normal after tooth extraction, and what are not?

Tooth extraction can cause various symptoms as the body responds. To better understand and monitor these symptoms, on this page, I’ve created a table that outlines the maximum possible symptoms on different days following the tooth extraction. This tool helps to evaluate the procedure’s success and ensure that my patients are well-informed and prepared.

Normal tooth extraction symptoms

  • The area of tooth extraction fills with a blood clot, which is almost black at first and is covered with white fibrin film later
  • Pain and swelling are usually felt similarly like after a moderate bruise and vanish in a couple of days
  • Bleeding discharge appears with red saliva, and the gauze in the mouth becomes bright red but not dark burgundy in the first 24 hours
  • Fever is felt like the flu during the first days
  • Hematoma arises on the fifth day

Abnormal tooth extraction symptoms

  • Any normal symptoms are lasting longer or more intense than average
  • Throbbing pain that occurred only on the fourth day with bad breath
  • Briny flavor in the mouth
  • Difficulties with breathing, swallowing, speaking, and mouth opening

What do I do to reduce the potential symptoms after tooth extraction?

  • Even though every patient will react to surgery, I have successfully reduced symptoms to an insignificant level in a considerable amount of clinical cases as an oral surgeon whose philosophy is utmost care
  • Conscientious health analysis to ensure a successful outcome
  • Pre-planning of the extraction via CBCT
  • Preparing all exact and potentially necessary instruments in advance to shorten surgery time
  • Keeping the pressure on the bone low
  • Mandatory visual control of complete cleaning of the tooth socket
  • Stabilization of the blood clot with a resorbable suture

A tooth extraction should be done with a power of 5 y.o. kid
